Get out into nature

Okambara’s location between the Kalahari Sandveld and the Khomas Highland Plateau creates a captivating intersection of landscapes. The rugged charm of the Kalahari Desert meets the elevated beauty of the highland plateau, providing a unique setting that embodies the diversity and allure of Namibia’s terrain.

Spanning 15,000 hectares, Okambara is a compact sanctuary akin to a small national park, where every inch is a canvas painted with the beauty of Namibia’s diverse flora & fauna.

Our wildlife

At Okambara, wildlife is not merely a feature but an essential part of the experience. From the graceful springbok to majestic elephants, the lodge showcases the rich biodiversity of Namibia. However, when the Schmitt family acquired the land in 1990, wildlife was scarce, as the area was predominantly used for livestock farming. Wildlife competed with cattle and sheep for grazing, and livestock was more profitable for local farmers.

Back to nature

Species like elephants, giraffes, zebras, springbok, impala, eland, wildebeest and many more have been successfully reintroduced, transforming Okambara into a thriving wildlife sanctuary. The lodge now plays a key role in protecting and conserving Namibia’s wildlife, working against its greatest threat: habitat loss. Through these efforts, Okambara helps sustain the natural habitats vital to the survival of wildlife in Namibia.

Feeling at home

The Schmitt family chose to restore the land to its natural state, creating a haven for wildlife and generating income through sustainable tourism. Initially, the only wild animals on the farm were oryx, kudu, dwarf antelopes, and warthogs.

Predators such as leopards and cheetahs were rare, as they posed a threat to livestock and farmers’ livelihoods. But the family believed in preserving the ecosystem as it once was, welcoming predators back into the landscape. A small rehabilitation center was even established to care for orphaned wild cats.
